BROOKE SAUVAGE is a seamstress, a writer, and a character based in New Orleans, last great Bohemia, riverside city of dreams, surrealist outpost on the edge of the world. She works in costume design as a way of casting characters on the stage of life, taking a jack knife to supposedly objective reality through means subtle and sparkly.
Mardi Gras is her ultimate muse: Fat Tuesday prevails along a tacit agreement that all show up in costumes befitting an alternate dimension. In turn we are granted a starry-eyed, city-wide suspension of reality, just for one day. That the fabric of reality could be altered by something as simple as the clothes that we wear is astounding in a world ruled by ‘yes’ and ‘no.’
We are taught to conceptualize an inherently incomprehensible world through a series of opposites: light and dark, good and evil, me and you. Our predisposition towards binary thinking has stunted our evolution as a species. In my work, I establish opposites, revel in their electric juxtaposition, and reimagine them in a way that winks at humanity’s vivid spectrum of possibility.
